In Pollice Court yesterday before noon Thomas Burke was in remand on charges of assaulting Acting Sergeant Guthrie during duty. Sergeant Hawkes led the prosecution and Burke denied the accusation in evidence.
The account states the defendant did not assault the police and suggests witnesses, including a sergeant and constable, misjudged events amid a large excited crowd. Cross examination notes the defendant was briefly excited but stayed on the footpath. Some bystanders yelled during the incident.
