A team of fifty donkeys is common, with forty or more under a languid Blackboy’s care, inching along slowly yet steadily. Donkeys pull at about one horse power, making big loads costly but vital where horses struggle for water and sparse food. Donkey collars are costly, and the creatures’ appetite for paper scraps keeps them satisfied when meals are scarce. They jealously guard water, chew odd bits of paper with resigned patience, and rarely wander far from worksites. The Blackboy drivers display patience, cajoling, and at times acrobatic water feats to keep the teams moving.
