Couple, Stephenson, Convicted Of Insurance Fraud Scheme
John Thomas Eric Stephenson, 3 percent ex-hotel keeper, and Helen Stephenson his wife were found guilty at the Quarter Sessions in Sydney on February 3, 1934, of obtaining 294 pounds by false pretences from Pearl Insurance. Stephenson was sentenced to 14 months and Mrs. Stephenson to 12 months after a jury verdict. The Crown alleged the couple falsely claimed a sedan insured in Helen’s name was stolen, while the car was not, and alterations and registrations were used to mislead insurers. Detectives traced Stephenson’s involvement in multiple car thefts and insurance frauds linked to several vehicles. The judge condemned the offense as serious, noting possible underlying criminal planning, while witnesses described the couple as previously respectable occupants of hotel work.
