Hallett defeated Laighton 23 goals to 10 in the North Eastern Association Grand Final at Hallett to win the 1954 premiership. Booborowle advances to the Grand Final at Spalding against Hallett after the preliminary victory.
At the Burra Town Council Insv meeting the proposal for bicycle provision in the shopping area was discussed. It was decided the council would write a letter, on the motion of Drs Lehmann and White, regarding the issue. Mess Hawke & Co. of Repunds asked for a price quote for six and twelve bicycle stands similar to a Kapunda example.
Members of the Burra Institute Committee gathered at the Hooringa Hotel to farewell Mr J P B Rowe of the National Bank who has been transferred to Port Pirie. Rowe has served as treasurer of the Institute Committee and received a silver souvenir cake during remarks.
The committee reports £260 still needed for the Youth Travel fund with only £24 raised so far. Donations are tax deductible and should be sent to the Treasurer, Mr M. L. Archer, with £10 deposits and £100 promised by September 1st. Twenty Burra Huga School youths aged 14 to 16 stand to benefit if local organisations and the public back the drive.
Frank Cousins of Booboowle claims the Mail Medal for the 1954 season in the Eastern Football Association after a repeat win. Rusner-up is K Eleinig of Letwnton with K Lane of Burra and HK Cousins of Booborowle equal for third on points. Lane clinches third on count back with three firsts compared to Cousins two. Cousins also earns the Phillips Cup, while Leinig secures the trophy donated by G Gast and Lane receives the How ard trophy from Teronte officials.
Tailem Bend pigeon race proves tough with only two birds home on Saturday and many late arrivals Sunday. Returns expected around 15 percent as strong headwinds slow velocity below 00 yards per minute. Results list H Swinson leading at 179 yards per minute, Broad second at 700 yards. Nomination forms for the two wheat growers representatives to the Australian Wheat Board must be signed by at least ten wheat growers and filed with the Deputy Returning Officer at the Commonwealth Electoral Office Richards Building 99 Currie Street Adelaide by Friday October 1 1954. If more than two nominations occur a ballot will decide the winner.
Burra Youth Club sent ten girls from Rural Youth Clubs statewide to the Adelaide Show as guests of the organisation. Free transport lodging and chaperone were provided for the trip to Wayville. Miss Avis Stockman represents the Burra Club at the event. A Friday procession featured youth group representatives, and a Rural Youth Movement ball was held at Freemasons Hall. Public speaking contests were conducted at Wayville Showgrounds with ten entrants.
Burra Cricket Association announces its annual meeting at the Hooringa Hotel on September 20 at 6 pm. Players supporters and the general public are invited. Four teams compete in the association Roonoona Burra But and Farrell Flat.
