Red Cross Auction Sale Brims With Bargains for Burra

The Burra Red Cross Branch held a second hand goods sale in the former G. Dollman premises. Furniture pictures ornaments and even clothing were auctioned, drawing a large crowd and raising over £16. Auctioneer Ray Jeffery led the sale with Mrs Jeffery as secretary and clerk assisted by two youths and Mrs F T Marston as cashier. The event showcased community support and may inspire future sales.

Burra Public School Class Honors and Appointment Notes

The Burra Public School records show Grade VI students Colin Nanskivell Pattie Parker and Grade VII Special Qc Test First, with Margaret Finch, Mary Lloyd, Mary Pearce, Hen fifth, Keith Hoon noted. Pam Davis received the Avro plant award, the tenth of its kind. The Rev M Cowle was appointed Rector of St Mary's, raising satisfaction and renewing weekly religious instruction for parish children. Cowle visited the school for the first time recently.

Burra Magistrates Court Fines For Drunkenness And Assault

On 6/10/42 at Burra Magistrates Court Louis English Lyons of Burra was fined £1 and costs 9/ for drunkenness and ordered one month in custody for insufficient means of support. He had prior drunkenness fines in this court. On 8/10/42 Samuel Albert Jones of Burra was fined £12 10s costs and compensation £27 6s 2d for common assault.

Burra Civil Defence Exercise Details for Air Raid Warning

The Burra public and personnel are advised of an air raid exercise to be held in the afternoon between 2 and 4 o clock. The air raid warning will be signalled by sirens at Burra Fire Brigade Station and Burra North Waterworks, with two minutes of rising and falling warbling. The public should seek cover in trenches or shelters and remain under cover until the all clear signal, two short periods, is sounded. Personnel will be posted by the officer in charge to manage the drill.

Mt Bryan East School Weekly Test and Sports Day

Mt Bryan East hosted a lively weekly test for lower grades and a sports day drawing cheers from students. Levi Maxted Hughes and Jorna Simmons led grade V events while Erin Ly and others competed in athletic displays. The event marked the seventh time the school earned the Melrose Cup, amid jubilation as teams from East Leo and Owen-Suryth performed well.

The Burra RSL Wives and Relatives Group held a Friday meeting in the R.S.A. Club. Mrs Rawker chaired with apologies from several members. Donations totaled £21 7s 6d for Christmas hampers, flowers funded the supper, and thanks were given for various gifts and a parcel sent to Headquarters including stockings socks mittens scarves and clothing.

Address of Soldiers Wanted in Camp Over Six Months

Burra Soldiers Welfare Committee announced a program to present a cheque of 1 to every Burra boy who had been in camp for six months and had not yet received a presentation. Secretary A B Riggs stated the committee aims to obtain addresses of all eligible soldiers.

Dance in Aid of the Royal Institution For The Blind

A charitable dance held at the Institute on Wednesday evening featured the Blind Orchestra and drew many non-dancers. About £20 was raised for Red Cross funds. the “Best the Band” prize went to Mr Les White, with D Warner coordinating the supper fundraiser.
