The Mount Bryan Institute hosted a Catholic Ball last Friday to aid St. Brendon’s Church. The hall was well decorated and filled with a happy crowd enjoying music, supper, and donations from local families and prize donors.
Reports show several past surveys failed to locate viable ore at Burra Copper Mines. Geologists note rich ground at an open cut with copper carbonates, but depth and irregular lode patterns hinder prospects. Local officials urged drilling after limited data, with results provided to an overseas company considering Australian mining.
Mr R C Lott reports readiness for the Guy Fawkes Celebration on Wednesday night. A Parade of Guys made by the public will be held in the afternoon with prizes for the best. The Annual Mid Northern Methodist Synod met at Kooringa on Tuesday and Wednesday October 28 and 29 with Rev C er as secretary I Wardle as lay secretary and B Vewper as circuit minister. Pastor Jobbs will retire in April next year and Rev Wardle announced plans for a married probationary minister or home missioner. The assembly heard about active service rendered this year and viewed films of inter church work. Lay representatives from each circuit attended, 35 churches 1 home missioner 1,314 members and 1 Sunday School scholar in the district. A luncheon, welcome words from local dignitaries, and goodwill remarks marked the gathering.
A community working bee coordinated by H. L. Foote built a 20 chain six wire fence along the Mt Bryan road crossing to ease tram delays. Volunteers supplied wood posts iron posts and tools with support from C. Beckwith Murray Griffen & Son and the car plant. The project aims to improve crossing safety and allow easier township access.
Glorious spring flowers in all varieties highlighted the Masonic Ball at Burra Town Hall on October 29 marking the Installation of Master Elect Bro. D. Thomas. Guests toured tiered cream cement holders, with Mrs Thomas and Mrs Field among the attendees, as bands played and dancing followed the ceremony.
On Saturday afternoon the first work began at the Caravan Park with J. Watson, L. White, M. Pritchard, W. Carpenter, W. Nankivell, J. Neale and others using a tractor and grader loaned by Burra Motor Co. A second working bee is planned for next weekend to cart stone and gravel. Plans are ready for submission to the Government Tourist Bureau for subsidy.
Members reported on C W A Avenue west of the hospital to the Adelaide road end. Ground around the trees was cleaned and loosened and the trees were growing exceptionally well.
A 52 year old laundress, Blanche De mares, was killed in Chartres when a running electric washing machine killed her after she entered the tub.
