Burra Town Council Meets Addresses Street Closings
Burra Town Council held a Monday February 7 1949 meeting in the Council Chambers. The mayor and seven councillors discussed Friday street closures for Market Square and Commercial Street, warding alternate Fridays for remaining Commercial Street and Burra North, and praised staff for incinerator and street work. They reviewed correspondence from Terowle religious talk permission, thanked Glenelg councillor Handley, noted wage increases, and approved leases with Aberdeen and Sooringa Tennis Clubs. Public Works reported, repairs to a ramp near Hairdresser's Shops proposed, and top dressing of Rail wily Road discussed. Authorities were asked to press Mr Pyke to keep streets clear, and garden progress at the Rotunda was praised. Abstracts of accounts were read and adopted.

Old Time Funeral Fashion Recalled from 1948 Time
A reminiscence describes black mourning customs for six months and half mourning thereafter, with women in black or gray and men in black. Hearses topped by sable plumes moved slowly on two-hour journeys. Undertakers wore bell toppers with crepe, and observers recall ghoulish vanity and a grim humor among body watchers.
