Insect Threat To Stored Wheat Warns Farmers
Farmers warned of stored grain insects endangering large wheat carryover. Technical Officer P M Dexter notes 5 percent of cereal food losses yearly to pests. Weevils, grain borers, and flour moths are key threats. gamma benzene hexachloride kills adults in 10 to 12 days, protecting grain for months. Infested grain is fumigated with CS2, cyanide, or methyl bromide. BHC powder can be trickled into the grain stream for pre storage treatment.
