Bob Seaford planned ahead buying many spare parts for a journey to Morgan. The radiator, sump oil leak, and lack of cork cause a setback, leading to a rough return to Burra. The incident becomes talking point for expectations ahead of the football season.
Council members audit local properties west of Burra and Gum Creek, finding widespread rabbit infestations and lack of eradication measures. Some wind holders plough warrens and show improvement, while others fail to meet required destruction efforts.
Burra District Council presses ahead with road improvements covering about 200 miles of roads. A heavy grader has been approved, and councilmen logged 125 miles on a inspection tour. Work to date supports strengthened sections, while neglected routes show wear. Total annual road expenditure reached £10,000 with major schemes at Bodholmale Main Road 45 and Burrs Road Lochier. A £3,000 grant request remains unsettled as government funds total £400,900 from car registrations, to be spent before June. Bitumen cost noted at £1,100 for a short section with overall costs about £3,300.
At a general meeting of 71 the Burra Burra Show Mircor porated in April, Rex C Warnes accepted the role as President. A minute praised W H Loyd for past services. The Governor may open the next Burra Show on October 5. Secretary Foote resigned. A new permanent center table in Flower Pavilion to be donated by R Fuss. Dog Tul and Dog Trial Cups discussed. Show ground luncheon pavilion to be painted by Burya Rural Youth Club. Number of Horse in Action classes to be reduced to match other shows.
Attendance at the April Booborowie GWA meeting reached 25 with Mrs Drew presiding. Plans were outlined to fence the hall-adjacent area for a playground, organize work via a Jusby Bee, plant trees, add equipment and a sand pit, and hold a Jubilee social with member donations.
A lighthearted new Australian transport focused book titled Looking Back Again debuts from Neptune Co. It presents Alec Bricetey cartoons built on months of research into early Australian transport history. Copies are available free on request from Neptune Service Stations and head offices Australia wide.
In the fourth stage of the No 4 District Union cover ranges double 600 Burra was defeated by Salisbury by eight points, totals 684 to 602. Conditions at the range were unsettled with mirage and wind shifts up to five degrees. Burra’s K Helorieh P Marston and Kakoschke excelled in the second round while Salisbury’s team, captained by W Glarke, held firm. No shooting next weekend due to Easter holidays. next event the 14th stage of the Kookaburra Trophy.
Kooringa Tennis Club claimed the A Grade Grand Final in the Burra Tennis Association for the second consecutive year. They defeated Aberdeen in the semi final and Spalding in the preliminary final, then edged to win the doubles and singles to seal the title. Hallett and Aberdeen featured prominently in earlier finals, with Hallett prevailing in singles after a season of close matches.
A Friday street stall conducted in aid of the Burra Bowling Club offered hot tongues, delicious cakes, jams and vegetables with steady sales. Total amount raised was £17. Mrs B Rooke of Worlds Br won the dinner. Helpers were Mesdames Kellock Wetts Binks Williams and Miss Ido Harris.
The District Council of Burra Burra has advised it can grant an annual permit for the foreshore at the northern end of Porter's Lagoon in the Burra Demobilised Soldiers' Association. The association had sought Council permission for use by bathers and picnickers as it plans its project.
Burra Institute held a Friday evening dance in the Town Hall to raise funds. Attendance was very poor with takings just over £10. Mrs Preiss provided music and Mr Murphy led the MLC. Doorkeeper was L White and ticket-seller J Topsfield. The event ran from 9 pm to midnight.
The district council will sell several mall township allotments to recover unpaid rates dating from 1940 as most owners are deceased. Proceeds aim to cover rates and legal costs with any surplus paid into the General Revenue Account of the Highways and Local Government.
Burra's Mayor Willan Carpenter, who has served four years, states he will not stand for re election this year. He led the town with enthusiasm and efficiency, doing more for Burra than many thought possible. In Market Square residents see him as a steady leader. He declares the duty now falls to another councillor to continue the work.
The April meeting of the Burra North Red Cross was held at the Croquet Club Falls with Mrs Jenison presiding. It was decided to send funds to the FLQ for the March appeal. Thirteen pounds was raised from car tranters and forwarded to H. Membérx of this Branch for distribution of Red Cross books at the hospital. The next meeting will be held on May 5.
