Ray Parkin Wigglesworth aged 25 was committed for trial at Busselton for a serious charge after a lengthy hearing. May Simith aged 4, soon 15, testified she knew him for nine months and alleged repeated offences while employed on her family's Hillbrook farm. Her mother, Hannah Smith, confirmed pregnancy and details of suspected improprieties.
Heavy rain caused damage to swamp potatoes near Quinodapal and Newtown. Mrs Catherine Harris, aged 84, widow of Ebenezer Harris, died at Quindalup after arriving in WA in 1853 and living near Vasse and Quindalup for decades. Wynne Kinnear to retire from Newtown State School at month end. Private S Carter wounded again and in hospital. Surveyors work on land for Margaret railway line for returned soldiers. EG Smith expected by next steamer from the front.
Witness advised him to depart but later consented to stay at the girl’s request. The girl’s daughter later bore a child still living. The accused, the only man present besides the husband, attended the last birthday. Dr E Paget Thurston examined the girl May 15 and again at the birth of a seven month child. Gilbert Arthur Wright knew the accused from Busselton births, with the father recorded as Roy Parkin Wigelsworth, 25, from Srighton England, and May Hannah Smith of Yallingup the mother. The accused pleaded guilty after declining further testimony. Inspector Brophy pledged to call Cahill later if needed. Wigelsworth was committed for sentence at the next Quarter Sessions, bail refused.
