Reflections on 1955 and Australia’s past fate

A writer recalls a Commemoration Day from years ago, arguing Australia once rejected England and white labor, faced capital withdrawal, and pondered independence. The piece laments loss of empire ties, warns of self reliance, and critiques the idea of “Australia for the Australians” amid a shifting global power balance. It ends with a dramatic meditation on national identity and misgivings about isolation.
