A strike of about 6,000 Welsh colliers at Cwntillery mine followed the dismissal of a miner for posting union notices. Rioting wrecked colliery buildings and the manager's house. Police failed to quell the mob until reinforcements arrived. baton charges cleared the rioters but several women and children were injured.
