Alfalfa Growing Facts From Indiana Experiment Station

In Indiana soil and drainage determine alfalfa success. Drain all lands prone to overflow and keep the water table well below four feet. Use good soil, inoculate with soil from a healthy alfalfa field, and apply stable manure 5 to 10 tons per acre. Remove weeds before sowing, avoid nurse crops, and plan for a five to six year stand. Harvest timing and hay curing follow clover practice with care to leaves. Pasture and livestock impacts noted, with emphasis on proper cultivation and soil health.
