The British seaplane fleet attacked from the sea area near Cuxhaven while German forces at Heligoland engaged British ships Arethusa and Undaunted. Seaplanes returned without major damage, but Berlin reports great excitement and estimates limited damage.
The Belgian forces resisted and launched a strong offensive with Allied support. In the final push, 2,000 German troops were captured while many others were wounded and killed.
The text estimates about one million Belgian refugees fled the country. Of these, around 110,000 went to the Netherlands and 100,000 to Britain. France and Luxembourg also received groups, with over 100,000 offered private hospitality in Great Britain.
