Early calving debated by dairymen and 1904 dairy cows
A Michigan Agriculture Department bulletin condemns early calving as a bad practice. It notes dairymen push 20 to 28 month calving for financial returns but questions size versus profitability. The bulletin cites record cows at St Louis tests, averaging around 180 pounds gain and heavier birth weights, and discusses economic production factors.

Do We Require New Cattle Breeds or Types
An article by Spero in the Aritiah Live Stock Journal debates whether new cattle breeds are viable. It argues few breeders will pursue applying heredity discoveries, questions the value of creating new breeds versus improving existing Shorthorns for milking and show traits, and notes the need for better understanding of nature's laws to guide practical breeding.
