William Beard a 22 year old mason's labourer with the Great Western Railway died after leaping toward a rope as a goods train approached in Box Tunnel near Corsham. His head and neck were broken, and a leg fractured as the train passed slowly. Beard, from Biddlestone, lived with his widowed mother and grandfather.
