The August fire in Constantinople destroys over half the city, burning more than 500 mills and grain stores. Relief camps form tents and ovens, with 209,990 people in dire need. Government discontent grows as ministers are dismissed amid looming sedition.
Four masked assailants attacked Edward Pettifer Reading of Fenny Compton with pistols and hangers wounding him and a servant before fleeing. both men recovering. In Gloucestershire, Mr Ireland of Forthampton was tracked at the Load while returning from Tewkesbury market by a man on a grey cropped horse.
A horseman with a pistol demanded money from Mr. Ireland, fired a grazing shot at his cheek, then rode off. Ireland gave chase but could not catch the rider, who was seen heading toward Ledbury and later near Birchmorton.
The London dispatch notes Parliament prorogation to 26 November and outlines government aims for Ireland and naval iron contracts. It details Crawley and Co disruptions near Tyne, 1600 discharged workers, and no bidders yet for the supply contracts. Also reports on naval officers, ships launched or ready, and shipping losses near Newfoundland. A fatal shooting accident and an execution at Tyburn are mentioned among domestic events.
