In a violent storm off Cape Finisterre the 74 gun ship, two 66 gun ships, and a 32 gun frigate sought shelter at Cadiz. Two young officers sons were aboard for marine instruction. Six more, with their Governor, were sunk by a large Portuguese bark. they drowned.
London reports Paymaster General Barre appoints George Helle as first clerk. Strachey departs for Paris with dispatches. British fleet reinforcement to West Indies under Adm. Pigot boosts line strength to at least 33 ships. Lord Howe praised for Gibraltar relief. Mail from New York notes 28 line ships, planned West Indies action. Jamaica and Cork trade updates include transports and troops movements toward Charles Town and Musquito shore expedition. A 32 gun French frigate with 200,000l. in belts captured, and Harlequin from Havana to Philadelphia seized by New York forces.
August 27 skirmish near Charlestown leaves Col Laurens dead as British troops hunt cattle and rice. Report notes 250 rescued from Hetor wreck, with 140 ashore and life hopes dim. Capt Boucher wounded, officers and crew listed. Court martial on Lieut General Murray proceeds. fires in Soho and Lincoln's Inn cause deaths. Duel between Erskine and O Bryen ends in mutual respect. Government urges ban on British subjects from enemy territories during the war. Charles Lee, noted Polish general and former US officer, dies after brief illness.
In Freeman's Journal 1702, United States in Congress assembled reaffirms full power to seek a general peace with allies and vows no separate terms with Great Britain. It urges vigilance against British emissaries and spies, pledges vigorous war until sovereign independence is secured, and directs states to detain and punish enemy agents.
Kineston July 20 The Tartar letter of marque Capt Taylor from this port foundered off the east end after a plank gave way. Captain and 23 crew swam ashore two leagues away, 80 men drowned. Captain Yarrow, formerly of the Admiral Rowley vessel, among the dead. Kingston July 27 Prizes taken by Alarm Captain Cotton and Preston Captain Leslie reached Port Royal with 7000 Spanish troops at Cape Nichola-Mole and a distant epidemic raged among them, burying 200 daily.
