Mont Suffrein sails against Madras in 1781 expedition
Reports from the Isabella via the Le of France reveal Mont Suffrein’s squadron left for Madras on December 7, 1781. The fleet numbered many ships, cost over seven million, carried 11,000 troops with six months’ provisions, 20 mortars, 40 cannon, and 32 smaller pieces under Mont Thomas D'Orve and Commander Suffrein, with Duchemin as Marechal de Camp. Canterbury fire destroys Henry Simmons workshops. Deerhurst wagon falls into the Severn, drowning one horse and likely the driver, who is missing.
