Anecdotes of Gainsborough Portrait Pranks and Generosity
Anecdotes recount Gainsborough altering a Duchess portrait with a brown background saying her Grace’s face was too hard to render. He gifted Abel's Viol de Gamba for its tone, stretched canvases to paint landscapes for Abcel, and sent a full length portrait of a wife with a landscape hidden as a cover.
