Federal election events in Bridgetown saw clashes as Labor and Liberal leaders spoke to electors in the Lesser and Town Halls on Friday night. Voters regretted missing one of the clashes and desired attendance at both sessions.
Mr. R. G. Casey spoke at Bridgetown Town Hall urging Liberal focus on industrial production and better employer worker ties. He criticized the Labor government for omitting constructive policy and warned unions against blind loyalty while praising Menzies and Fadden as constructive leaders.
Red Cross certificates were presented to a long list of local recipients including Mrs. G Asplin and Mr. Frank Badrick among others. Speakers discussed wartime controls, postwar policies, population pressure, and Australia’s place in the British Empire and with the United States. They noted government actions on acreage, dairy subsidies, immigration, Soldier Settlement, taxation and coal production, with calls to keep Australia on a steady path after the war.
Nelson Lemmon M H R spoke to electors in Lesser Hall praising Labor policy and rebutting opposition claims. He cited Labour tax cuts since the war and warned against means tests and extra charges. He discussed wool industry threats from synthetics and praised the Potato Committee's wartime production efforts.
Elder Smith and Co Ltd announce a forthcoming sale on Tuesday September 24 at 2 pm offering 100 cattle including 40 fat Shorthorn cross steers and several cows heifers and springers plus 1200 sheep and lambs with varied prices quoted for different classes. Further entries invited and Midland Junction market notes 14 000 sheep and lambs traded with prices steady to firmer.
Elder Smith and Co Limited report a monthly market with 195 cattle and 120 sheep warded and 179 cattle and 76 sheep sold. A keen demand followed for Shorthorn and Shorthorn erases steers four to five years in order, with a yarding that included fat steers cows and a pen of light weight dairy springers from John Muir Hilton Upper Blackwood.
Bridgetown Rifle Club will hold a Working Bee at the rifle range at 9.30 a.m. on Sunday 22 September to tidy and restore the range. Secretary F. M. Paget announces the event.
Bridgetown Agricultural Society invites tenders for catering the supper at the Show Ball on the evening of Friday 8 November. Tenders must be marked catering and addressed to the Secretary Fox 86 Bridgetown.
