A school savings effort helps Smiley Greevine set aside funds. He mediates a deal between Willie and Rankin at Hean pub and is warned to stay quiet. He aims to be a bush ranger but is arrested. A ten unit fine from a police sergeant resets his plans.
Smiley and Blue join a goat race at Murrumbilla where Fred Stephens’s winkered goat wins the only prize. Spectators gush as goats bolt toward the river and riders tumble into the sand. The scene ends with a 5 prize awarded to Fred for the lone successful goat.
The race will be re-run for the same prizes of five bob half-a-dollar and a bob. Bets placed on the first race will stand for the rerun. The committee bans goats wearing winkers for any race today and prohibits standing behind the tape to avoid frightening the goats.
