Blowfly Control Boosts Sheep Industry with Mules Operation

Australia faces multi million pound losses from blowflies. Since 1928 CSIR and the Joint Blowfly Committee promoted a scientific offensive including the Mules operation on ewes, long tail docking, crutching, and jetting. Trials show 1.2 per cent strikes on 10 000 treated ewes vs 13.5 per cent on 8000 untreated. Continuous two crutchings yearly and timely docking reduce strikes and bolster wool yield.
