Flax Industry Prospects Hit By Water Shortage At Boyup Brook
Interviewed this afternoon the mill manager said 2400 tons of flax had been delivered from the 1948/49 harvest with about 300 tons more expected by early next week. Yields from straw are high but rust lowers grade. total deliveries will exceed last year by 500 tons. Water supply at Boyup Brook dam is critical as salinity requires treated water, and a bitumenised catchment is deemed essential though government action is stalled. The flax cooperative may appeal to the minister if no progress occurs.
