Local paper honors four Reeves family members for long lives and their pioneering work in Western Australia. The quartet brings 312 years collectively in the South-West, highlighting contributions to settlement and regional development.
Alfred C Reeves and Arthur Reeves of Manjimup, Nurse A H McAlinden of Bridgetown, and Mrs E S Reid of Bunbury are saluted for long service to the Manjimup and Bridgetown regions. The profiles note McAlinden’s 1000 children aided and decades of rural nursing, Reeves’ farming, road board, and coop work, and Reid’s 40 years in Bridgetown life and family duties.
The Greenbushes R.S.L. held its annual reunion at the Memorial Hall with disappointing attendance but a lively evening. Mr. Wilfred Allen played the piano, songs were sung, toasts were given to the King and the Women’s Auxiliary, and the secretary noted about £30 remaining on the hall. An appeal for more Sub-Branch involvement was made as plans for future socials were discussed.
Mr C P Scott praised the State Housing Commission decision to let local authorities issue housing permits and release materials. He said average service costs plus expenses would be covered and the move could spur more country homes and reduce centralisation.
A local meeting rescinded a motion on bitumen road widths. Chair Mr Moore argued narrower roads could extend service distance, enabling more users. Engineer Grace advised 10 ft strips suit Mt Barker areas, with debates over safety and shoulder wear. Wider runtimes would affect trucks and curb maintenance. Final widths set: Allnutt 10 ft, Peninsular 12 ft, Nannup 12 ft, Tweed 12 ft, Grey’s Hill 12 ft, Steere 10 ft, Amos 18 ft, Phillip 12 ft.
Last Friday the Bridgetown Road Board heard a written complaint by Mr. S Brooks about arsons uttering obscene language while using a footpath seat outside his residence. He asked that the seat be moved down the hill. Mr C Scott warned seat removals could lead to more requests and suggested police involvement. The Board agreed to notify the police.
Bridgetown defeats Boyup Brook to win the pennant in a multi-event tennis final. Final tallies show Bridgetown with 11 sets and 82 games to Boyup Brook’s 4 sets and 61 games across men’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, and women’s events.
