A June meeting discussed water supply options for Nowra and the Shoalhaven area. Engineers evaluated building a dam on the Wollondilly catchment, pumping water 1800 feet, and potential pipelines from Nowra, Warragamba, or other schemes, but noted impracticable paths and large scale storage unlikely to meet demand. The review concluded the Shoalhaven catchment could not reliably supply the district from storage within the foreseeable future.
Midday Sunday accident at Canbewarrs during Meld Warving operations of the Volunteer Defence Corps left Arthur Booth severely injured and his comrade Mr. Croyle hurt. Booth, a popular Nowra figure in banking and sports, faces serious injuries while Croyle’s condition is not life-threatening. The event prompted sympathy across the district as details emerged of the blast and ensuing medical aid.
A report describes women volunteers in a rural labor program helping farms amid a food shortage. Led by A. W. Ekonomore, coordinator of the Women Save Asm Adewory Coats, the initiative places women on farms to operate machines, tend livestock, and perform ploughing and feeding tasks to supplement scarce male workers. The effort aims to show women can perform practical farm labor and ease wartime shortages.
South Africans of the Royal Naval Reserve served in the Grand Fleet during the war. Members trained at bases in Bemerton town and aboard sea-going ships. A Department of Information photo shows shells being loaded onboard the ammunition ship Nelson, each shell weighing over a ton.
