Australian Explorers Open Inland Route to Bathurst
The article chronicles early explorers in New South Wales facing a barren barrier at Blue Mountains. In 1818 Mavers Claxland Tinwain and Wentworth found a path at Macquarie Way and Governor Bathurst funded a road, enabling traffic. Surveyors then sought rivermouth routes, crossing wetlands and swamps as they traced rivers toward inland settlements. The Bathurst venture spurred wool production and settlement along the Macquarie and Lachlan rivers, with further journeys by Cantina Laas and others expanding inland exploration.
