Northern Territory agriculture aid and settler program review
Dr J A Gilruth notes that progress in Northern Territory agriculture hinges on migrant settlement from Southern Europe. 1914 saw many land blocks offered near Daly River and Stapleton but few applicants had capital or agriculture experience. Remaining workers faced high wages elsewhere, limiting land improvements. Demonstration farms showed maize, cow peas, peanuts, rice, and other crops could grow, with pigs and cattle offering viable small-farm livelihoods if freezing works expansion occurs.
