The Bombala opening of the Cooma Bombala Railway drew crowds as the official ceremony marked by a ribbon cutting by Mr. Costes. Delegates from Sydney and regional visitors attended a day of processions, children’s sports, a tree train ride, a banquet, and a free picture show.
The town raised funds for decorations and visitor entertainment by selling commemorative buttons marking the opening of the Cooma Bombala railway. About 1500 buttons at one shilling each were sold, aided by Miss Sivewright and Miss Forsyth in the street. The railway’s opening followed decades of agitation and a Railway League push, with the Public Works Committee inquiry in January 1901 amid ongoing district efforts.
Street decorations for a Bombala event feature a Wool Arch at the town end of the railway bridge built under C. H. Pierce of Karavi. Wool packs form the arch sides, white wool with black border, bearing year themed murals 1880 and 1931. Butter box rows from Cathcart factory line the structure.
The inquiry chaired by the Public Works Committee reviewed a Works Department estimate of £575,270 for the Cooma to Bombala line and £20,000 annual deficit. The 1901 recommendation favored Bombala but not Delegate, with subsequent bills in 1907 and 1908 moving the project forward in stages. By 1912 Nimmitabel to Bombala opened, while the Nimmitabel to Bombala second section faced tender overruns and a revised survey to cut costs and shorten the route to the Victorian Border.
Local residents campaigned for a north south rail link as funds ran out in 1916 and works closed. In January 1917 a letter from Henrikson and Knutson highlighted a £370,000 tender for the second section with two years six months to finish, and a revised route promised to save £60,000 though total costs exceed £492,000 including day labour.
