The Nelson Football Association secretary condemns poor gate takings at interassociation games and warns of dangerous litter from broken bottles around the field. He cites repeated cleanups and urges spectators to curb drunkenness and protect children during weekend events.
At the August meeting the Bridgetown Road Board tabled petitions from Forrest Dean and Barlee Streets residents and Johnson Gunn Road neighbors. In September it was decided to start work on the latter two. The effort focuses on reforming and gravelling Barlee and related roads to enable bituminising, with reports due next meeting.
Secretary E C Siggins reported about £2000 spent on clearing and construction of the new Bridgetown sports ground. Of £4927 loan funds, £3000 to earthworks and £600 to loaming were planned. Negotiations with a nearby private loam owner were discussed with potential board action to resume if cooperation failed.
A portable wireless belonging to Mr. F. Maslin, stolen about three months ago from the Bridgetown Hotel, was found in a blackberry dump behind the hotel by Mrs. W. Gardiner. The set was in good condition aside from minor rust and perished insulators. A stolen suitcase from the Freemasons Hotel was later found discarded in a laneway off Steere.
The Under Secretary for Health urged strict economy to avoid penalising patients as hospital costs rose. The board debated charging out patients and supporting in-patients with private wards, and planned an 8/6 and 10d daily increase for out and in-patients at upcoming conferences. It was announced that the Department and Lotteries Commission would subsidise stainless steel ward and theatre equipment by 33% each, totaling £198, while enamel sinks and draining boards were not approved. stainless steel sinks were sought for nursery and ward pan room.
The death of Mrs. H. R. Gifford of Catterick is announced. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Nelson. Bridgetown residents join in condolence to Mr. Gifford and family.
Police court heard three men Geo Newport Stanley Charles Newport and James Speer resisted a police officer in the line of duty and obstructed an arrest outside a Bridgetown hotel. Sgt Chambers in civilian clothes identified himself as an officer before the struggle. All three fined £1 with costs.
Local notices list St Pauls Church of England with Holy Communion at 3 am and Holy Eucharist at 11 am plus Evensong at 1.80. Country Service at 3 pm and Maya. Methodist Church shows Sunday School at 10 am and Family Worship at 6 am with Nannup evening service at 10 pm led by Rev. A. Meyer.
Bridgetown Road Board calls for more time from the Government stock inspector to combat foot rot and other diseases. Chairman M F Scott says previous visits were inadequate and inspectors may have missed affected stock. Member K T Smith accuses inspectors of accepting owners statements. Board notes permits needed for each truck load to Midland abattoir and asks Agricultural Department to act.
Manjimup Nelson and Bunbury youths prepare for a triangular tourney with two busloads arriving from Bunbury and strong contingents from Manjimup and Greenbushes. Sel ected Bunbury, Warren and Greenbushes players join squads coached by Syd Brookes and De Nisbett as umpires.
The central boundary lies about one mile north of the town while the southern limit extends four miles out. Councillors call the current setup silly and propose a smaller town boundary with farmers near the town seeking equity in amenities and town rates. A committee is appointed to define the townsite at the central ward end.
Bridgetown Road Board, advised by solicitors, can resume land and lease it to stock agents for sale yards, ending years of the battle of the yards. At a Friday meeting chair Malcolm Scott said the board may resume all of W C Johnson and Son’s blocks and part of Mrs Wright’s block to lease to agents for 21 years with renewal.
Perth travelers and other state residents are stranded in the South West due to an acute Agena petrol shortage. Bridgetown garages report restricted sales to locals, lower allowances than the past five months, a company freezing supplies, and reduced quotas of 30 and 10 percent.
Residents of Bridgetown and surrounding districts report the death of Jack Hearn age 45 born Kalgoorlie. He moved to Bridgetown in his twenties and ran a ing business from his late father John Henry Hearn. Survived by mother Mrs E J Hearn and sister Dolly Mrs Bob Wheatley. Funeral held Tuesday with Rev T Pelham Thurman officiating at the graveside. Large floral tributes and mourners show the esteem in which he was held.
An appreciation note honors Jack Hearn who served clients for twenty years despite heavy physical disabilities. The writer recalls knowing a Victoria Cross winner among others and commends Hearn as superior in sustained, consistent courtesy.
