Bridgetown Road Board approves a full time Health and Vermin Inspector to enforce Health Act regulations and assist smaller authorities. The move aims to relieve overworked staff and improve sanitation, though some ratepayers doubt funds and criticise recent statements by Health Commissioner Dr. Cook.
The Manjimup Dairy Produce Co Ltd faced Bridgetown Police Court charges for failing to comply with a February 3 Dairy Industry Act order. Inspector K W Simes testified the Balingup factory had greasy floors, vats, and pasteurising equipment needing immediate attention, with no action taken by March 22.
Mr. C. P. Scott said that if conditions were as bad as Dr. Cook Ines why had the reports of visiting health inspectors always been good. Bridgetown residents praised the town’s cleanliness with no infantile paralysis and prompt diphtheria care. He argued the board’s secretary was unfairly blamed and that members should have joined Dr. Cook on a tour of inspection.
The board secretary challenged Dr Cooks statements as critics would have prompted complaints. A full time health and vermin inspector is to be recruited with a joint inspector for Bridgetown Boyup Brook Greenbushes and Nannup proposed but not agreed. Until appointment a part time officer will act at charges not above £3 per day. Greenbushes asks Bridgetown Road Board to appoint the Health Inspector for periodic visits.
The Bridgetown Road Board decided to postpone replacing foot pipes in Roe Street after the Secretary explained the plan. Members also rejected a £18 claim from the Public Works Department for bulldozer work clearing a firebreak in Manjimup, noting volunteers aided firefighting and fast action was needed during emergencies.
The Bridgetown Cricket Association announces season awards for 1948-49. Gordon Forrester of Bridgetown leads batting average 42.8 and bowling average 6.5 and also claims the club's batting and bowling trophies. J Dwyer of Railways takes most wickets 36, with W Harrison of Railways winning fielding trophy. Roe of Sunnyside tops batting average in a separate accolade. Ben Fisher trophies go to J Dwyer bowling and L Shoebridge batting.
At a Bridge town Road Board meeting Mr. H. J. Smith urged widening Wheatleys Road to allow vehicles to pass, citing danger to a school bus on a blind bend. He moved that the road be widened at intervals by clearing areas off the edge.
Three Bunbury men narrowly escaped severe harm when a car left the South West Highway between Bridgetown and Manjimup on May 12. occupants F Fowler W Pearson and D Cull suffered injuries including concussion nose and facial wounds and amputation. The vehicle plunged down a bank and rolled twice ending upside down near a telegraph pole.
Local residents give mixed views on Dr Cook's critique of Bridgetown streets. A businessman cites mud after rain, a banker defends autumn cleanliness, a typist says streets are fine, a housewife prefers dry streets, and others urge timely cleaning and repairs including potholes on Hampton Street.
Road board members conferred with stock firms after a monthly meeting about a site 23 miles from the trucking yards. They weighed land provisions, costs to transport beasts, and potential abattoirs near Bridgetown, agreeing to review with engineers and place the matter before their firms.
