Mayanup Race Day Draws Big New Year Crowd

A large turnout attended the Mayanup New Year meeting with the main event the Grey-Smith Handicap first division won by Warmaster. Gaiery King surged to double wins in the Robinson Purse second division and Grey-Smith Handicap, while Miss Sheen owned by D. Castles won the Polo Crosse Pony Race and the G. J. Henderson Hack Race.

Christmas Vehicle Mishaps Across Bridgetown Area

A series of Christmas era accidents occurred around Bridgetown and Boyup Brook. Mr E C Drake Brockman’s car rolled after children left inside as the hand brake failed. Mr Margettes’ party in a car rolled over a bank and hit a tree injuring Mrs Margettes and infant Lorraine. Minor crash two miles north of Bridgetown involved J Taylor’s utility damaged after dust affected visibility and a collision with R Gardiner’s vehicle. Mrs Margettes and baby were hospitalised for observation.

Elusive Snake Seen Near Convent School Grounds

Residents on Steere street search for a large swamp dwelling snake believed to nest behind the Convent School. The 4 to 6 ft reptile has been spotted crossing the road between Barlee street and the Presbytery but remains out of reach each time.

Memorial Park Project Takes Shape

The old war memorial was removed from Monument Hill to the new site in Memorial Park. Earthworks are graded around the memorial in preparation for the Anzac Day service. The Bridgetown Road Board promised the project would quiet critics as the park gains a commanding hillside position and an imposing entrance.

Farmer John Trew Shot In Self accidental Incident

John Trew a 27 year old farmer of Carlotta was injured when a rifle discharged while he was bending to pickup his gun for a hunting trip. The collapse of the rifle is believed to have released the firing pin and struck him in the stomach. He was admitted to Nannup District Hospital and later moved to Royal Perth Hospital with a fair condition.

Passion Fruit Stem Rot Examined by Government Plant Pathologist

An isolated stem rot outbreak in passion vines in the lower South-West prompted sending samples to Perth. The Government Plant Pathologist identifies Sclerotinia sclerotiorum as the cause and notes surgical removal of infected branches as the remedy after attack.

Nominations for six races at Busselton meet are listed with many names. Owing to insufficient entries for the 2.26 class only one race will run on Wednesday night January 9 while an extra 2.40 event is added to the programme.

The bride wore magnolia satin with a juliet cap veil and orange blossom bouquet. Bridesmaid Miss Pamela Stokes wore blue brocaded gown. Ceremony performed by Rev H Prary at Bridgetown, reception at Grey Stones. Couple to reside in Nannup after honeymoon with plans to reach Perth on New Year’s Day boat.
