Bridgetown asks residents to back the British relief drive with a target of £1000. A public meeting led by Mr H Moore decided on weekly street appeals and district canvassing after already raising over £200. Directors and attendees pledged donations, aiming to exceed the goal if possible.
A provincial paper reports floods the worst in living memory and a hurricane that felled trees. Langford suffered swampy homes and river overflows turning the town Venice-like. Citizens urged to donate urgently with a depot at Bon Marche corner and upcoming fundraisers.
Collectors will visit homes to solicit donations with a promise of an official receipt and no repeat requests. The board urges everyone to contribute, not leave it to a few, and notes an appointed list of collectors showing strong organizing work to speed results.
Red Cross notes show the Flood Relief Appeal collecting 47 pounds 4 shillings 6 pence from named donors including Stall, E Farleigh, B Wallace, A Reid, M Nix, G W Kern, A Forrest, R Kerr, Aberdeen, Korn, Lea Moulton, W Hack and R Cross plus anonymous gift. The Ladies Auxiliary of the RSL donated 40 pounds. A charity football match organized by the Red Cross raised 27 pounds. Bridgetown Tennis Club contributed 5 pounds 4 shillings 9 pence and Freemasons Hotel gave 6 pounds 5 pence.
A list of appointed collectors for the British Food Relief Appeal is published by ward and district. Representatives include W Owen Dean Street Roe Street Steere Street, W C Moyes Block near Railway, R H Sandilands Nelson Street Allnutt Street Campbell Street, H A Doust Hester Street, J S BagAW in South East Ward, K Haines and Ira E G Hall North Ward, J Henderson Kangaroo Gully, S S T Waters Winnilup, Reg Hester and L A Evans Glentulloch Road, F Melinden Eight Mile District, with S Siggins as secretary and Eck as treasurer.
Facing an overdrawn three per cent account the Bridgetown Road Board votes not to withdraw further funds. Members still donate £5 5 to the Food for Britain Appeal, setting a fine example for others to follow.
The Greenbushes Road Board discussed who should maintain the Soldiers Memorial as the original trustees are gone or departed. They resolved to contact the local BASL to request take over care and maintenance of the memorial.
An estimated 470000 bushels of Granny Smith apples set a district record for Donnybrook. Granny Smiths are about 75 percent of Preston district’s crop this year, with value near £80000 for the variety alone.
