The Bridgetown Advance lauds the Policy Pool move to publish an illustrated district brochure for the lower South West. It cites benefits for tourism and urges inclusion of a wider 2000 square mile region and six road districts surrounding Bridgetown for fuller coverage.
Employers urged to contact the Commonwealth Employment Service after a Perth conference. Migrants, including many family groups, are arriving by ship with a large total expected by year end. Employers may gain priority housing materials for migrant quarters, and holding camps exist for workers awaiting jobs or housing.
April events include Catterick Progress Association dance on Saturday the 16th and Catterick Farmers Union meeting on Monday the 18th. Panto mine Mother Goose plays at Bridge town on Thursday the 21st, with junior farmers meeting in Bridge town on Friday the 22nd. May dates cover Farmers Union Ball in Bridgetown on Friday the 6th and Church of Emelard Ball on Friday the 18th.
Mr Walter lauded Mr Doust for fifty years of continuous service to the society and noted his support from wife and family. Attendees recalled his retentive memory and guidance, while Mr Doust recalled the society’s 1893 formation and early shows. An illuminated address was presented, with birthday tributes to several members.
At a complimentary dinner for Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Doust, Malco m said Doust served 25 years on local road boards including three as chairman. John Muir praised Doust as the oldest living continuous exhibitor at the Royal Show and a top winner for British sheep breeds.
A possible water shortage looms in Bridgetown as one and a quarter million gallons remain in the reservoir. Rain is badly needed, though early rainfall would not immediately benefit the dam. Officials warn consumers to conserve water until rains set in.
State Electricity officials discussed lighting the trotting track at the new sports ground under construction. Mr. Scott said the power house cannot handle extra load until a new plant arrives in about two years from England, with Australian delivery taking about six years. The Electricity Commission proposed the Trotting Club hire a Perth generator and find a motor to operate it to provide lighting.
Mr C P Scott urged Bridgetown officials at Friday’s meeting to study opening a diphtheria clinic as health authorities warn this year could reach epidemic proportions. He noted epidemics occur about once every seven years and pressed for action soon.
Mr Scott reports stock firms aim to find a new site with four acres for sheep and cattle facilities and individual pig yards on the same block. The Education Minister Mr Watts says the present sale yards will be resumed immediately and a new school is hoped to be near completion in two years. Agents are expected to cooperate as a stock firm letter confirms the plan.
The South West Scheme is expected to light Bridgetown with no major difficulty once implemented. A plan to hire paneras at seven percent annual cost is discussed, with the generator to be hired via the Road Board rather than directly to the Trotting Club. A 60 horsepower engine is noted for the generator, and Commission representatives say the scheme should be satisfactory where at least four houses exist per mile.
Most Bridgetown shops close from Thursday night to Tuesday morning with banks shutting until Wednesday morning. The road board and Commonwealth Employment Service offices follow shop hours. Cher s and bakers open Saturday morning. one baker opens Monday morning for an hour. Newsagent opens 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday and Monday. Post Office open Monday 9 to 10 a.m.
At the first annual meeting in Lesser Hall Bridgetown Mr S Doust was re elected president. Secretary Thon Rooke and treasurer L Simmons were elected with vice president Harrison and a committee including Smith Brathwaite Clarkson Semmons. A Farmers Union letter urged fair rifle bullet distribution to orchardists and a Bridgetown firm was noted for selling large quantities. An annual Bridgetown Hotel dinner followed with Malcolm Scott and E C Siggins present by invitation.
