Public notice advertises sealed tenders to be received by the Honorable the President of the Privy Council Ottawa on Monday May 30 for works and quantities, with payment terms and conditions. The notice warns that bids must comply with terms and authorizations and that the advertisement proceeds without authority if not sanctioned.
The Birtle Observer describes the Manitoba river shore as a growing wild landscape with woods, wild fruit trees, hops, and abundant wildlife including rabbits, lynx, bears, elk, and deer. It notes seasonal changes, hunting interest, and the appeal to sportsmen and naturalists. It also reports a house fire at Mr. James Wilson’s and a contentious correspondence in the Morning Courier.
A fragmented editorial urges Manitoba to resist American predation in trade and immigration. It laments past Canadian debt from U S plunder, praises a growing northern route and CPR support, and calls for faster Hudson Bay road development to keep Yankees out and boost local industry. It argues for self reliance, immigrants, and improved inland transport to secure prosperity.
The Rev J L Simpson has accepted the call from Binscarth and Silver Creek congregations. His induction is set for May 26. Windy days spark prairie fires in the area and wolves are troubling local sheep keepers, with several lambs killed or hurt.
