Manitoba West: settlers urged to view new districts opened by railway
The letter from Birtle Observer describes Manitoba’s northwest districts opened by the Manitoba and North-Western Railway, praising farm belts near Portage la Prairie and Shoal Lake Russell. It notes abundant timber, groves around farmhouses, diverse wildlife, and potential for wheat oats and barley, with many unoccupied farms awaiting settlers and improved markets provided by the railway. A tribute to Captain Chambers, a former Ontario farmer and local Justice of the Peace, reflects on his death and public service.
