Little Viscount Tarbat’s birth the other day renders more remote the succession of Lady Constance Richardson, so well known In this country as Lady Constance Mackenzie, to her sister’s earldom of Cromartle and to the largo and valuable estates that go with the title, yielding an income of about a qilarter of a million of dollars. Lady Constance, it may be remembered, married very suddenly and unexpectedly last winter Sir Edward Stewart RJchardso'n. and has within the last few weeks given birth to a son. who is the heir to his father’s baronetcy, ono of the oldest lnlt;the United Kingdom, dating from 1630. 'A week after his appearance upon the scone the Counters of Cromartic, who is a peeress in 7ier own right, likewise became the mother of a little boy, who thus becomes heir to her four peerages, and to her estates, and who bears, in accordance with British custom and usage, one of her minor honors; namely, the viscounty of Tarbat.Lady Cromartie’s husband is Maj. Edward Blunt, a retired officer of the Royal Artillery, and be will be compelled, when his son grows up, to yield him precedence not only On official occasions, but also in society; while, when Lady Cromartle dies, and the son succeeds to her earldom and other peerages, the difference of rank between father and son will be even still more marked, since the son will be a member of the House of Lords, and his father an untitled commoner.The Earldom, of Cromartle, which la a new creation of the laKt reign (and not as so many people seem to believe, a revival of the old Scotch Earldom of Cromarty, which was forfeited to the Crown when the Jacobite, Ear! George, look up arms in behalf of the young pretender, “Prince Cahrlie”), was granted by the late Queen to her close friend and confidante, the late Duchess of Sutherland, as an English and not a Scotch honor, the Crown being debarred from creating any Scotch peerages. In the patent it was stipulated that on the death of the Duchess, who had Inherited, all the estates of the last Scotch Earl of Cromarty, the honors should go with the* property to her second son. The latter on his mother’s death became second English Eurl of Cromartic of the Victorian creation, and died about eleven years1 ago, .leaving two daughters, Slbell and Constance.
