cmiaren.Death of Cupt. George II. Petti*.Tho California veterans will be distressed to learn of the death of Capt. George H. Pettis, State Sealer of Weights and Measures of Rhode Island, and who has been for so many years the life and energy of the California Veterans* Association. He was in Washington a few months ago In attendance upon the convention of the State Sealers and Weighers and seemingly In good health, hut after Christmas his health began to decline, and he died In his apartments at Providence Jan. 2S. So man was better known than Capt. Pettis. He began life as a printer in Rhode Island, then cupght the gold fever and went to California, crossing the y«tiunua at Nicaragua. Ho was In several of tho expeditions to n**w gold Helds, but did not mako any great stake, and returned to the printing business, becoming u reporter on the San Francisco papers. lie entered tho service at Lincoln's flrs; call in the 1st Cal., and served in that regiment until It was mustered out, when he entered tho 1st N. M. os a Captain, and was brevetted for distin-gulsned and gallant service In lights with the. Comanche and Kiowa Indians. He was not mustered out until 18GS, when he returned to Providence with his wife and thrco children. He served in the Common Council, in tho Legislature, and then us Hoarding Olllcrr of the Port of Providence. He was next marine editor of the Providence Journal, and then became State Sealer of Weights and Measures, a duty in which he took much Interest. Ho was an active Grand Army man from tho first, and particularly interested in the California Volunteers, of which organization he was President for several years and Set rotary afterward.
