They are making new friends -- thinking new thoughts and going new places. New responsibilities are being thrust upon them, but their original obligation remains greatest --to protect them -selves from harm. Our juvenile officers have visited our schools and emphasized the hazards of traffic and encouraged students to maintain alertness on the streets. Frequent warnings are givenby teachers and parents. However, these do not fulfill the responsibility of a community safety pro-^rftzxis - ^ » - *Frolic and games divert responsibility and children can be expected to momentarily neglect to restrain themselves. But can we adults excuse ourselves forOnean instant of neglect while driving ? moment at the hospital or at the sceneof a traffic accident can provide a never-to-be-forgotten reminder of traffic hazards. The picture is even more vivid ifthe victim is of one’s own kin.Let’s spare ourselves the anguishofthis impression but be aware of its potnn-tialities. The rewards of cautious vehicleoperation are too great to be overlooked.Punitive measures of traffic law are designed as retardants and administered with reluctance. Your police force encourages the citizenry in a cooperative effort for the safety of our children and joins the prayers of their parents that we may be spared the tragedy of trafficaccidents.Officer Jerry KuznieskiriCATHOLIC WAR VETS DANCE
