It also covers assisting others, keeping hands under pillows, and safe escaping with sheets or ropes tied to beds.
In a besieged city a woman relates cats perched at her window watching every bombardment. The cats arch, stiffen, and fight when shells hiss, then retreat. The scene repeats with each shell while the family, though appalled, can’t help laughing at the bizarre spectacle.
A compact piece extols human sight aided by science and contrasts it with birds. It notes the telescope and microscope expand knowledge, and describes a bird’s precise, instantaneous perception and swift, near‑invisible strike. It laments bird fatalities caused by telegraph wires and lighthouses.
A garrison officer punished a soldier with fourteen days in a windowless cell bound by bamboo bars. In monsoon heat a cobra slid inside and pressed the man to his chest as he lay in the narrow cell. The guard and sergeant eventually killed the snake, and the officer released the prisoner the same day after the ordeal, witness to severe mental strain.
