During his rule in India Sir Charles Napier abolished suttee, the burning of widows on funeral pyres, while claiming to respect local customs. He warned that those involved in widows burning would be hanged, urging all to act according to national custom.
A tarnished health column warns cheap toothbrushes cause throat and stomach ailments due to poorly attached bristles. It urges careful use, warns against overreliance on such brushes, and suggests basic hygiene and moderation, citing general cautions about dental care and daily routines.
