Profitable Orchard Venture Near Benalla Gains Ground

The article profiles G. Nash of Benalla who shifted from traditional farming to fruit growing. He established an irrigated currant, raisin, and sultan vine operation on 15 acres near the Broken River, netting substantial yearly returns and expanding with apples, plums, peaches, and citrus. He uses a water pump and netting to protect vines from rabbits, and advocates careful pruning and open-field drying for produce. Nash’s early drought experience and Mildura training underpin his success, with yields around 40 to 540 plus pounds per acre and significant sales in Shepparton, Dookie, and Victoria towns. His diversified planting, including six acres of currants and four acres of apples, demonstrates a profitable alternative to sheep or wheat farming.
