A chaotic outbreak in Point Isabel involving a self styled prophet Spearo led to mass delusions and violent acts. Followers proclaimed his visions, many collapsed socially, and authorities ultimately restrained and jailed key figures while sending others to a lunatic asylum. The episode ended with convict Spearo sentenced to Montevideo and later released after Austrian intervention, ending the public strife.

A Galveston merchant uses him to identify theft by clerks, correctly naming the guilty pair, a young woman and a man, who then receive punishment and a month's vacation.
