Heavy floods wash away weir and rail line damage

Copious rains last week caused major floods across the colony. The northwestern district reported extensive railway damage near M Callorn's Crossing and a halted Adelaide Express. A Maryborough line derailment occurred near Glaness Gorge with cars and passengers stranded as the bridge collapsed. Weirs on the Yarra broke, towns flooded, and streets like Station and Tallarook faced rising waters. Rescues were made, including a patrol boat rescue of a sick woman, while rivers rose to record levels and daily rainfall totals reached noteworthy sums.
