Tom Raffles, a 29-year-old gunner with a Norfolk background, enlisted for Indian service after taking the queen's shilling at St George's barracks Trafaigue square. He soon fell into bad company, became a disciplinary problem, and after weeks of guardhouse stays and reckless acts, borrowed an officer's uniform and rode away. Bertie Stratford, the colonel's son, befriended Raffles and joined him on the gun carriage during a grand Lahore review, leading to tension as Raffles faced possible court martial while the governor general watched the maneuvers.
