Bath Tragedy at Bath ends in deadly despair
The Bath tragedy tells of Miss Braddock a charming girl who lost fortune and love. Her lover Maggard was jailed for debt and deserted her. In London Henry Nash helped her, she moved to Bath tried to forget with work at Mr Woods in Queen Street. She fell into feverish gambling, wrote a suicide note and hanged herself on September 5 1721. An inquest deemed her insane, she lies beside her father General Braddock in the Abbey Church at Bath as a warning on the dangers of cards.
