Deputations from Goorambat and Baddaginnie pressed for water supply schemes. Dr Wallace and local leaders urged Minister action, detailing pump and gravity systems, costs, and community willingness to pay. Minister promised engineer review with Benalla officials. both towns would share subsidies under a population-based formula.
Bands from Goulburn Valley and North East perform in Benalla Gardens Sunday afternoon and evening March 12 to raise funds for the Benalla Memorial Band. Competitors include Euros Boys and Citizens Band Shepparton District Brass Rutherglen Tonetue Wan Town Yackandandah Citizens Shepparton and District Pipe Benalla Memorial Band and Beechworth Town Band. A torchlight march from the Fire Station starts at 8 15 PM.
District soldier settlers report no dissatisfaction with the Soldier Settlement Commission yet urge action on material shortages. At a Benalla gathering fifteen settlers outlined needs for wire fencing gates, uncompleted surveys, and bridges. The group asked for a Commission visit to discuss issues and pressed for submission of a detailed report to the RS L Land Settlement Committee for action. Mr Leask will present the report to the Soldier Settlement Commission and seek further representations.
Five candidates and their backers compete for the Popular Girl crown in Benalla. The event funds the swimming pool project, band debts, kindergarten and Rotary travel fellowships, with a ball on May 12 at Shire Hall where the winner will be crowned.
A Benalla team meets Yea-Mansfield Association at Henalla Oval starting 10.30 am and finishing around 6 pm. Twelve batters per side with eleven fielders. a twelfth man and emergency are named along with Benalla and district players and substitutes.
A large crowd attended the Goorambat Football Club annual meeting where Mr. A Keating was elected president. The club decided to rejoin the Benalla and District League and elected officers for the ensuing season including J Roscoe F Saunders B Wallace as vice presidents J A Phillips as secretary A Davis treasurer. Trainers W Feldtmann and I Down were appointed again. The captain and vice captain will be chosen at the first match.
The Benalla Water Works Trust faces asks to reconsider, with strong government backing for a pipe line supplying 20 000 to 30 000 people. Four soldier settlers will receive permanent supply, and residents along the line may connect, paying for added taps. Officials investigate unemploy ment relief funds used for the reservoir.
On a Wednesday afternoon the Minister of Water Supply and the Shire President hosted a dinner at Brokeniver Motel after a quick inspection of the Nilahcootie scheme. Officials noted big projects like Eildon delay smaller schemes and a formal tender for overseas contractors remains unsettled with limited progress anticipated. The minister also inspected the Winton Swamp and said Nilahcootie impressed him most among the sites.
