Governor Invited to Open Benalla Show

Following advice from the Private Secretary to the Governor, the Benalla A. and P. Society decided at Friday's meeting to invite Governor Sir Dallas Brooks to open this year's show in October. The society applied in January and was advised to apply before July as the Governor's itinerary would not be considered until late June.

Repairs to Lowenry Street Sought by Ten Residents

Ten residents of Henry Street petitioned the Benalla Borough Council on Tuesday asking repairs be made due to bad conditions that threaten delivery of goods by tradespeople. After discussion the matter would receive attention as soon as possible. the Mayor Dr. F. R. Harrison noted that work would resume when rain stops.

Kangaroo Hunting in Tasmania Visit Ends in Warm Welcome

Mr Jim Higgins a longtime Benalla railway member and his wife traveled to Tasmania for a fortnight. They viewed the 1823 convict built bridge at Richkumond and then went to the Great Lakes where Mr Higgins enjoyed kangaroo hunting. They returned with happy memories of a welcoming state.

Progress on Bernard Briggs Free Kindergarten Ground Purchase

The committee won a bid for a block in the estate of the late E. E. Tomkins adjacent to the kindergarten to be used as an extra playground for expansion. A fete at Memorial Hall tomorrow from 2 30 pm will offer a produce stall and several competitions. Donations of goods are requested to boost stalls and fundraising.

This Year’s Show Booth Sold At Public Auction

The show booth rights will be sold by public auction reverting from the wartime percentage basis. Dr. Wallace notes other societies used the move for better profits. The auction aims to restore prewar arrangements and boost returns. Also a film listing: John Mills and Joan Greenwood star in The October Man at Regal Cinema on Saturday and Monday.

Jap Bishop to Pass Through Benalla

The Right Reverend Mbtute Yuuguro, Bishop of Kobe, will pass through Benalla on Monday June 19 starting at 7 30 pm at Trinity Cathedral. He will be greeted by Fey F G Moyle of Holy Trinity Church and Mayor Cr F R Harrison when arriving by train.

Melbourne's Jhon Held Seeks Bell Clarke Cup Third Time

Jhon Held of Melbourne will have his name inscribed on the Belle Clarke Memorial Cup for a third time after winning the mixed four somes handicap at Benalla Golf Club last weekend. He won previously with Helen Todd and Joy Strickland and this year partners with Betty Meadows, all Melbourne residents. Held, who has played golf for only three years, achieves a feat warranting special mention.

North East Tourist Association nominates council rep

Mr S Thwaites was re elected secretary of the North East Tourist Association and nominated as the Benalla Borough Council representative on the Association. The council will tender him its thanks for his service. Dr A Gourley deputised for the Mayor at Wangaratta on May 30 reporting Mr B Meller re elected president and Mr G Thwaites as secretary. The association is seen as addressing real community needs with many matters discussed.

Proposed Swimming Baths Project Moves Forward

Borough Council discussed the erection of swimming baths at Tuesday’s session. A Construction Committee will meet to finalize financial responsibility and the council will assume control. The mayor noted an engineer may be hired to oversee the work with a three month continuous presence anticipated.
