Efficient Use of Pastures in Dairy Farming
Victorian Department of Agriculture judge Mr. K M Sillcock notes many dairy pastures are undergrazed due to labor limits and lack of subdivision. He cites labor shortages, unaffordable harvests, and the need for a fodder conservation program. A South Gippsland farmer uses tractor routines and portable electric fencing to ration grazing, saving pasture in winter and autumn.

Growing lucerne under irrigation guidance from Victoria official
G B Rayner, District Agricultural Officer, Victoria, prescribes 10 lb seed per acre for hay lucerne and up to 20 lb for green feed on small plots, with 2 cwt of superphosphate per acre, mixed just before sowing. Emphasizes shallow sowing, timely irrigation, and regular watering with caution to avoid surface pooling. Early cutting reduces yield but succulent forage outweighs disadvantages.
