The Great Arras Battle Heavy Bombardment and Breakthrough
Correspondent reports ghastly effects of British bombardments on reinforced concrete machine gun ports, trenches smashed into ditches, and Germans using rails and farm debris as cover. Snowstorms aided a large force move between the Scarpe and Douai Road while artillery crossed near Rocux and Moneby. By nightfall British bombing parties reached the village fringe, fatigue setting in after 36 hours of fighting as Monchy fell and survivors surrendered.
